It is an opportunity to join and get to know a growing community of those of like faith from around the world. **Why join a small group?** It is through being a part of a small group of believers that we have a great opportunity to grow in our personal walk with our Lord and Savior, while cultivating deep and lasting friendships with other believers. It is also essential for our Christian walk that we come together as a family of believers, for fellowship, encouragement, support, and spiritual growth. Just as we all have many body parts that work together to make up a complete person, so also, though we are many individuals, together we make up one body in Christ (Romans 12:4-5). **What can I expect in a Zoom small group?** The Zoom small groups are a place where people have the opportunity to pursue authentic community and spiritual growth. When you join a group, you will spend time socializing, learning, and praying together. **How will the small group sessions work?** The sessions will consist of video trainings and discussion questions that you'll discuss with your small group. **What if I can't make one of the weekly sessions?** There will be different topics covered each week so we encourage you to still join and attend the weeks that you're available. **How is GetEquipped.org connected with Calvary Chapel Chino Hills?** CCCH’s role is advisory - to come alongside and help GetEquipped.org provide CCCH teaching and ministry resources to individuals not local to Chino Hills, CA. so they may grow in community and the grace and knowledge of God and His Word through a Zoom setting. Neither GetEquipped.org nor Zoom small group facilitators are employed by CCCH. **Have additional questions about Zoom Small Groups?** Email Jon and Jen Barrett at support@getequipped.org. ## Blog Posts --- # Why Believe the Bible? URL: https://www.getequipped.org/why-believe-the-bible Author: Jon & Jen Barrett Published: 2026-09-07 > Three honest questions anyone can ask of Scripture, and why the answers hold up. Every Christian eventually gets asked the question, sometimes by a skeptic and sometimes by their own heart: why believe the Bible? It is an old book, written by dozens of authors across roughly fifteen centuries, in three languages, on three continents. It makes enormous claims about God, about history, and about us. A book like that deserves to be examined, not just assumed. Scripture does not shy away from that examination. It invites it. The Bereans were commended because they "searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so" (Acts 17:11). So this post asks three plain questions of the Bible: Is it loving? Is it logical? Is it true? Each one can be answered, and the answers build on one another. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” ## Is it loving? Start with the tone of the book. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is the story of a God who pursues people who have walked away from Him. He clothes Adam and Eve after their failure. He feeds Israel in the wilderness while they complain. He sends prophets to warn, not to gloat. And at the center of the whole account, He comes Himself, in the person of Jesus, to die for the people who rejected Him. A loving book is not the same as a flattering one. The Bible tells us hard things about ourselves because it wants us whole, the way a good doctor names the illness so it can be treated. "Faithful are the wounds of a friend" (Proverbs 27:6). Its commands about honesty, sexual faithfulness, generosity, and forgiveness are not arbitrary rules; they describe the kind of life that protects people and communities from harm. If the Bible were merely a human book, we would expect it to flatter its authors and their nation. Instead it records David's adultery, Peter's denial, and Israel's repeated idolatry in plain language. That honesty is itself a kind of love. It refuses to lie to us. ## Is it logical? Faith is not the absence of reason. The Bible asks us to love God with our mind (Matthew 22:37) and to "come now, and let us reason together" (Isaiah 1:18). A logical case for the Bible begins with its internal coherence. Sixty-six books by around forty authors tell one consistent story: creation, fall, redemption, restoration. Promises made in Genesis are kept in the Gospels. Details in Exodus are explained in Hebrews. Then consider its transmission. We do not have the original pages of any ancient book, so scholars judge reliability by how many copies survive and how close they are to the time of writing. By that standard the New Testament is in a category of its own. The chart below compares surviving manuscript copies for several ancient works. Quantity is only part of the picture. The gap between the writing of the New Testament and our earliest fragments is measured in decades, not centuries. For most classical works that gap is five hundred to a thousand years, and nobody doubts we know roughly what Caesar or Tacitus wrote. Logic asks us to apply the same standard consistently. A second logical test is prediction. The Old Testament makes specific claims about a coming Messiah, written down centuries before Jesus was born. The table lists a few of them alongside where the New Testament records their fulfillment. | Prophecy | Old Testament | Written (approx.) | Fulfilled | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Born in Bethlehem | Micah 5:2 | 700 BC | Matthew 2:1 | | Born of a virgin | Isaiah 7:14 | 700 BC | Luke 1:34-35 | | Betrayed for thirty pieces of silver | Zechariah 11:12 | 500 BC | Matthew 26:15 | | Pierced hands and feet | Psalm 22:16 | 1000 BC | John 20:25-27 | | Buried in a rich man’s tomb | Isaiah 53:9 | 700 BC | Matthew 27:57-60 | | Raised from the dead | Psalm 16:10 | 1000 BC | Acts 2:31 | ## Is it true? A book can be kind and coherent and still be false. So the final question is the one that matters most. Here the Bible stakes everything on a single historical claim: that Jesus of Nazareth was crucified, buried, and rose bodily from the dead. Paul put it bluntly: "If Christ is not risen, your faith is futile" (1 Corinthians 15:17). He was not asking for blind trust. He pointed to more than five hundred eyewitnesses, most of them still alive when he wrote. The events the Bible describes happened in real places, under real rulers, involving real people. Archaeology has repeatedly confirmed names and locations that critics once dismissed: Pontius Pilate, the pool of Bethesda, the city of Nineveh, King Hezekiah's tunnel. None of that proves the Bible's theology, but it does show that its authors were writing about the world they actually lived in. Finally, the Bible makes a claim you can test personally. It says the Word of God is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), that it changes those who read it and obey it. Millions of ordinary people across two thousand years have found that to be so. Read it honestly, do what it says, and see. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Is it loving? Yes, in the deepest sense, because it tells the truth about us and about the God who came for us. Is it logical? Yes, it holds together across centuries and survives the tests we apply to every other ancient text. Is it true? That is the question each of us has to settle, and the Bible's own answer is an open invitation: taste and see. Start the Training Join a Small Group
